Mosta Rotunda & WWII Shelter — Magical Mosta
The third-largest unsupported dome in the world — and the underground shelter where Mosta survived the war.
The gigantic Rotunda, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is decorated with paintings by Giuseppe Calì; in the sacristies you can see a replica of the bomb which pierced the dome in 1942 and failed to explode. Below the church square, the hand-dug World War II shelter has been reopened with an exhibition of wartime Malta — a genuine journey back in time.

The great dome
Outside diameter 56.2 m, internal height 54.7 m — breathtaking.
The miracle bomb
The 1942 bomb pierced the dome, landed in the church — and did not explode.
The WWII shelter
Dug by hand in 1940 by fifteen workmen; today a moving exhibition.
